Blog #6

What are you most looking forward to next semester?
Well, I guess I am both excited and scared to get started on my new major since I changed to Surg. Tech.. Mostly, I am just hoping that I didn't make the wrong choice. I guess I will find out. Also, I dont have to wake up until noon most days, that makes me happy.
What advice do you have for incoming freshmen next fall?
Well, I would say don't stress yourself out of the college experience like I did. Take some time from doing homework to have fun and let loose otherwise you just end up a bundled mess of nerves and stress and that isn't any fun.

blog 4

Wont let me copy and paste so...
1. I am stressed about passing my classes with at least a B or better, getting a good GPA, getting more volunteer hours, my boyfriend not having a job which means I have to get a job again, not having enough money to pay for my boyfriends tuition, not getting into the radiography program, and finally whether this is what I should do everyday for the rest of my life. Why, well because I am an overly obsessive person with no self confidence and I think I will fail at everything. Yes my body is tired all the time and my mind doesn't want to concentrate anymore, plus I'm sick :( . I have a few plans for some of my problems but mostly I dont have enough time or strength to solve everything. Mostly I vent to my boyfriend or get angry at him which is bad, or I vent to my mom when she is around. I really hope that one day I will get to enjoy college and not dispise it so much.

"Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fall."--Ralph Waldo Emerson--
There are two parts to this Blog:1) Pick a classmate's Blog and read one of their entries. Leave one comment on it. (You'll see where you can click "Comment" at the end of it - you must be logged in as yourself to leave a comment). At the bottom of this, you will find a complete address list of everyone's sites.
2) Write Blog #4 on your own page, answering the following: What do you have in common (academically, personally, etc..) with the classmate whose Blog you chose? Did s/he offer any useful information you will most likely use in the future?

I have some things in common with amanda such as our ideal teacher would do more hands on and answer all our questions without making us feel stupid for asking. Also she has problems with questions which are worded differently which I hate. I dont understand why they cant just ask us the question, why do they have to complicate it. Guess they just want us to fail. She didnt offer me and useful information.
p.s. i like your quote, it helped me through the day.

What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on? I think this class should focus more on studying, not better study habits. Just because I read about study habits doesn't mean I will use them or have time to read about them. This class gives me more homework than my other more important classes so I think we should have less assignments. Also, its nice that we can read about what we are eating but that doesnt really help me pass my classes. I would like to spend at least an hour of the class in study groups because out of class I am too shy to join a study group.
What do you need help in, specifically?
I need help in chemistry and anatomy since I am doing to worst in both. I think the week before exam week, we should really focus on studying for those important classes so I don't fail at college.

Blog #2

(#2):Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.
My ideal professor would have personal relationships with all the students and know everyone's names. He would answer your questions straight on and honestly. He would also use lots of visual examples and he would lecture slow enough to retain the information.
Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?
Use different study methods such as with a partner or with flash cards. Also i find if i read over my notes before I go to sleep, they stay fresh in my mind during the next day.
Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?
Read notes. Do study tricks. I would like to study with someone else but I'm pretty shy and have trouble finding someone I'm confortable with.
Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?
Remembering Equations.
Also, read this short excerpt-- I was shocked:For coffee drinkers, it would seem fairly safe to just grab a quick cup of coffee at McDonalds on the way to work. But many health conscious people would object to it also including this list of ingredients: sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate, and carrageenan.http://rinf.com/alt-news/culture/surprise-ingredients-in-fast-food/1654/
Some of these food additives are not foods at all, but are chemicals that are generally recognized as safe. Most of these additives cannot be found at your local grocery store, probably because they aren’t food. But some can be found at your local hardware store, though in inedible products like low tox antifreeze, silicone caulk, soap, sunscreen, and play sand.(This website is used only for citation purposes - you don't have to go there, unless you want to. Caution: It's scary!)
Finally - Do you feel as if there is any healthy fast food available to consumers? If so, where and why? Give specific examples of products.. Please be honest and support your opinions. For example, I feel that Subway's Veggie Sub is healthy due to its freshly-cut produce, cheese, and "fresh-baked" breads. I actually talked to a friend who works at Subway and he said in MQT, they slice their own produce. (My fear was that it arrived pre-sliced and filled with preservatives). It's not organic, but it's a start.

I would say subway has to be the healthiest just because the veggies are fresh andthere is none or a little grease involved. I like subway as fast food because it has a lot of variety and I dont get too bored of it right away.

First Blog

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
Be a fruit loop in a world full of cheerios. :)
Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
Nicer people, pretty landscapes.
Ø List initial observations of your classes.
Hard. Stressful.
Ø What observations have you made about other students?
More laid back. Some dont care about their classes. Some dont care about other students.
Ø About your instructors?
Most dont care if i fail or pass.
Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
Anatomy. I really dont want to fail. I cant fail.
Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.
Distal means farther from the joint, Proximal means closer to the joint. The fingers are distal to the elbow. the wrist is proximal to the elbow.
Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.
Found a comfortable place to do homework. Got to leave early from some of my classes.
Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.
I can force myself to study. Hard worker???
Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.
Sleeping??? Working? I havent figured out how to fit everything in yet.
Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.
I try to write down everything on the board, all terms, and things the professors mention to list.
Ø Based on your first readings in the TCB text, describe the differences between Active Learning & Passive Learning (reading, note-taking, etc..)
Active learning is taking notes during class instead of passive learning which would be just listening to the lectures. By taking notes you retain more information than just listening.
Ø Based on your first readings in the BT text, list TWO of favorite quotes and explain why they "speak" to you.
"You see guys spending hour after hour in their rooms playing online video games. Its like wow thats quite the social life you have there pal." I like this one because it reminds me of me. I like to keep to myself and do what i want to do. I need to be more social.
"Make lists. In high school you can do it when it comes to mind or when someone reminds you. In college there's too much to remember and nobody's going to remind you!"
This is so true because before in high school I could have all my homework done before I even left school but now homework is all I do and mommy isn't here to make sure I get it done.
Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
Start note cards for Anatomy and Chemistry and know them.
